7d agounexplained move

No Swiss headline explains this hour: no SNB comment, no Swiss release and no Swiss political or banking news landed between 12:18 and 13:18 UTC — the SNB's most recent communications are Vice Chairman Antoine Martin's August 26 Basel speech on macroprudential tools and the August 24 monetary-policy data release, neither of which touches the exchange rate — and the gate confirms no high or medium CHF event within two hours.

CHF's +13.2bp median, all seven legs positive and tightly clustered between +10.93bp (GBPCHF) and +15.69bp (CHFJPY), has the shape of a funding-currency squeeze rather than a haven bid: the yen, the other haven, is the softest on the board at -3.49bp, USD is flat at -1.11bp, the commodity bloc sits inside 3bp, and oil is still falling — Brent at $86.93, down 1.03%, a fourth straight session of declines on the Iran–Oman corridor progress.

The franc has spent August becoming the market's preferred carry-funding leg: Bloomberg reported on August 19 that carry traders had pivoted from yen to franc funding after the late-July yen intervention lifted yen volatility, with hedge funds' net franc short near a two-month high in the week to August 11, and ING wrote on August 21 that the franc could become the 'preferred funding currency', targeting EUR/CHF back at 0.9400 while warning that a sudden appreciation could force unwinds.

The positioning data have since started to turn — speculators' net franc short narrowed to 27.3K contracts in the week to August 21 from 32.5K — and an hour in which the franc rises against every G8 currency including the yen, with no data behind it and the dollar not trading the 12:30 UTC claims print (USD -1.11bp; the calendar was not carried this run, so I state no number), is what a slice of that short being covered into Warsh's Friday keynote looks like.

The tape was risk-on, not risk-off: US futures were higher into the open on Nvidia's beat with the stock up around 6% premarket, the dollar had recouped some of last week's losses through the European morning with the euro at $1.1639 and sterling at $1.3577, and gold was up 0.2% at $4,599.57 by 08:52 GMT after Wednesday's 1.4% drop.

There were headlines with a haven edge, and the board did not trade them as such: White House press secretary Leavitt told Fox News that 'no negotiations are happening right now' with Iran and that the president retains all options, framing the strategy as Operation Economic Outcast to 'destroy their economy'; IDF Chief of Staff Zamir said today the army is 'advancing battle procedures on all fronts, from Iran and Lebanon to Gaza' and ordered a bolstering of troops in the West Bank, after Hezbollah drones targeted troops in southern Lebanon overnight and an Israeli strike in Ansar killed at least seven; and Russia struck nine Ukrainian cities overnight with explosions heard in Kyiv.

Against that, Qatar's prime minister met Araghchi in Tehran and the two discussed the interim Hormuz corridor framework and a joint mine-clearing project, with Sheikh Mohammed calling for freedom of navigation, and crude held near $82 despite the week's second tanker attack. Nothing here makes the measured signals wrong about the regime: this is positioning in a currency priced by the market, the SNB's stated readiness to lean against appreciation has produced no statement today, the Iran story remains diplomatic-economic with oil confirming, and no official actor is setting any G8 currency's price. No override, and no active overrides to keep or lift. Next: Warsh's first Jackson Hole keynote Friday August 28.

unexplained move — Price moved past the measured noise band with no calendar print or speech in the window to account for it. The journal is where this system writes down what the measured numbers cannot see. Every read is dated, kept unedited, and graded against what happened next. How that grading works.
