The franc went bid against the entire board — all seven legs, +76.7bp against the dollar and +49.7bp even against the yen — and no single in-hour headline accounts for it; this is haven rotation into the last clean haven colliding with a crowded short. Two documented conditions set it up.
First, CHF was the market's funding short: Bloomberg reported this morning that carry traders have pivoted to the franc as their funding currency after yen volatility spiked, with hedge-fund net shorts near a two-month high in the week through Aug 11, and the franc had been sitting near its weakest in over a year around $0.82 — squeeze fuel.
Second, the Hormuz standoff has turned kinetic again since the ceasefire lapsed: the US carried out more strikes on Iran overnight and the two sides are exchanging fire, Trump says he will reinstate the blockade, and the IRGC says it is adopting an 'offensive' posture with a commander warning Gulf states against helping the US military — strait transits remain collapsed at roughly seven a day versus ~110 pre-war.
With the dollar dovish-soft into the 18:00 UTC FOMC minutes and the yen carrying the Takaichi fiscal premium (both covered in my last two entries), the franc is the only haven left with a clean story, so the geopolitical bid and the funding-short cover land on the same currency at once — which is how you get a 54bp median hour with no release.
The board's composition confirms CHF-specific repositioning rather than global panic: JPY's median is just +4bp, CAD is flat despite the oil tail risk, and the S&P is actually higher today on the Treasury's expanded buyback announcement. No override: no official actor is setting the franc's price, the war has been the ambient regime for over five months, and a haven bid expressed in price is exactly what the measured signals can see and track.
Two triggers to revisit: the SNB has said since June it stands ready to intervene against franc strength — an actual SNB operation would be a clean ccy_bear CHF override case, an official actor with unlimited franc-selling capacity capping the move — and a full war signature (JPY joining the bid, CAD offered on oil) would reopen the risk_off question. Next risk: FOMC minutes 18:00 UTC, Trump 18:30 UTC, AUD employment 01:30 UTC.
