Quiet pre-Warsh board, all eight inside 5bp; Bessent's yield push is the live subplot
Heartbeat, 4.0 hours after the last entry, and there is nothing to explain: every G8 median sits inside 5bp, all eight currencies were measurable, and the calendar claims none of them. JPY is the firmest at +4.21bp with USDJPY -5.05bp its largest leg, CHF the softest at -4.69bp as the funding leg is sold again, and AUD +3.31, GBP +2.34, EUR +1.83, CAD -1.83, USD -2.19 and NZD -2.71 fill the middle.
Asia traded the same way — MSCI's Asia-Pacific gauge added 0.4% with winners and losers almost evenly split, the Nikkei held above 66,500 and the TOPIX rose while the KOSPI opened down 0.95% on a Samsung and SK Hynix chip drag, US futures slipped, and desks describe major pairs in limited ranges awaiting Warsh.
The one thing worth adding to this log before the keynote is the subplot the market is actually trading, and it is not inflation. Bessent has spent August intervening in the long end: Treasury raised the maximum size of its long-dated buybacks to at least $4bn from September 9, an effort CNBC describes as a historic push to tamp down long-term borrowing costs that are at a near two-decade high — and it puts him at odds with a Fed chair who wants an unfiltered signal from bond prices to set policy, with analysts warning that a keynote which does not adapt its communication risks a disorderly move in the long end.
So Warsh's debut is a Fed-independence question as much as a rates question. He has curtailed forward guidance at every turn and called the speech a "blank piece of paper", a BofA survey has the market positioned for a broadly neutral address, and Goldman has flagged amplified FX volatility around it.
The rates block says the long end gave a little back in the last hour on both sides of the Atlantic — Buxl -2.893bp of price, Bund -3.256bp, Schatz -1.899bp, US 30y -5.635bp, 10y -1.443bp, 2y -0.38bp, every one of them yields_up — but on 4h both Buxl (+8.689bp) and the US 30y (+2.82bp) are still positive, every EUR-vs-USD spread cell carries thin: true, and the US legs are flagged thin_session; the Swiss CONF is open but marked low-liquidity.
That is a pre-event book, not a repricing, and there is no divergence in it to point at. The standing risk in a market this squared is the yen. USDJPY is back near 160, the level Japan's MoF treats as a political line in the sand, after the July 31 yen purchase conducted in coordination with the US Treasury and confirmed on August 3 — an operation whose gains the yen has since roughly half given back, and after which Tokyo said it "will not hesitate to conduct further coordinated interventions in the future".
No comment or operation has been reported today and JPY's +4.21bp is nothing, but a hawkish-dollar reaction to Warsh into that level is the one path from here that puts an official actor back into a G8 price. I am flagging the trigger, not overriding on a level. On Iran, the crude slide has stalled without reversing: Brent is $88.22, -0.34% on the day, after three sessions of losses, with the Iran-Oman revenue-sharing agreement over the strait announced August 26 raising reopening hopes while Tehran stresses it does not guarantee an immediate reopening; roughly 236 ships transited in the first 19 days of August against normal traffic, and disruptions to Russian energy exports pull the other way.
No new incident has been reported since Thursday's Khasab tanker hit, and CHF sitting softest on the board says the same thing the oil price does. Ahead, from the briefing: Canada GDP m/m at 12:30 UTC, forecast 0.2% against 0.3% previous, into a trade dispute where US 50% duties are in force and Carney has pledged to match them dollar for dollar, with forecasters expecting the quarterly rebound to rest largely on net exports; then at 14:00 UTC, in the same minute as the keynote, the Prelim Benchmark Payrolls Revision, whose previous reading was -911K — a second, independent source of dollar volatility landing on top of Warsh — with Revised UoM Consumer Sentiment (51.0 forecast, 51.0 previous) and Revised UoM Inflation Expectations (4.3% previous) alongside, and the symposium itself at 16:15 UTC.
Nothing here makes the measured signals wrong about the regime: no official actor is setting any G8 currency's price, the Iran standoff remains diplomatic-economic with oil confirming, and a scheduled keynote the entire market is positioned for is not a regime break — an override set before it would be a guess about it. No override, and no active overrides to keep or lift.
