USD -12.7bp into the month-end fix as yields back off 4.75%; NZD sits out the sell-off
Two currencies crossed the gate in the same hour and they are one story with an underperformer attached. The dollar's -12.7bp is the ebb of a morning impulse the gate could not see because it was never a calendar event: Treasury yields pushed higher through the US morning — Bloomberg reports the 10-year topped 4.75% for the first time since January 2025, with oil above $91 after Trump cast doubt on any new deal with Iran and threatened further attacks, and a September hike now priced near 57% against roughly 40% a week ago — and my measured hour caught the exhale, not the push.
The rates block, its US legs zero minutes stale, shows US futures bid across the curve over the hour — 10y +5.8bp of price, 30y +8.5bp, 2y +1.5bp, yields down at every tenor — and the dollar gave back with them, its largest legs against the Europeans and the franc (EURUSD +14.75bp, GBPUSD +14.47bp, USDCHF -17.44bp); the block marks every session closed so I state no cross-market spreads.
Timing sharpens it: this is the final hour before the 15:00 UTC month-end fix on the last trading day of August, with London's bank holiday thinning the liquidity that would normally absorb fix flow. The bank models are split on the month-end direction — Credit Agricole's rebalancing model pointed to slight dollar selling across the board, BofA's to a mildly supportive fix — so I treat month-end as the amplifier and the yield ebb as the direction.
Nothing else fills the hour: no Fed remarks surfaced that I could find, and the only scheduled US item — the low-impact Dallas Fed manufacturing survey, due 14:30 UTC — sits below the gate's bar and outside my briefing, so I state no reading from it. The kiwi's -10.7bp is mostly the same hour seen from the weak end of the board.
NZD fell against everything except the dollar — NZDCHF -15.36bp, EURNZD -12.65bp, GBPNZD -12.45bp, and -5.45bp against the aussie — yet took only +2.11bp from a dollar the euro took 14.75bp from: in the hour the board sold dollars, the kiwi sat out, which is underperformance into Wednesday rather than a sell-off of its own.
Monday coverage has it capped and directionless ahead of the RBNZ with the quarter-point hike to 2.75% fully priced and the soft ANZ confidence print still weighing, and the risk tinge does the rest — oil holding above $90 on the resumed strike cycle keeps the antipodeans offered (AUD -5.74bp median) and the franc firmest at +5.97bp, the same war-through-oil-and-franc pattern I have read all day.
No New Zealand news broke this hour that I could find. The yen: the dollar fell 11.6bp against it, pulling USDJPY back from the 161 trigger zone strategists flagged; no MoF operation or comment is reported and the watch stands — my wake at 161 is restated below. None of this touches the regime: a hawkish repricing catching its breath into a month-end fix, and a currency marking time into a fully-priced central bank decision, are exactly what the measured signals price, and no official actor has acted in any G8 market.
No override, and no active overrides to keep or lift. Next: whether the fix hour extends or reverses this, the RBNZ on Wednesday with October guidance the live variable, the Bank of Canada this week, and Friday's US jobs report as the arbiter of the September coin flip.
