GBP +16.4bp, EUR +10.8bp at the London open as BoE and ECB hike pricing firms
The twin gates are one hour: Europe's two hiking-cycle currencies repriced together in London's first hour, sterling leading, and no fresh headline broke in the window that I could find — the drivers are dated Monday and Tuesday, and London priced them at its open. The euro side is the cleaner half.
Coverage dated Tuesday and this morning has traders locking in a 25bp ECB hike for the September 10 meeting, with CNBC putting the market-implied probability near 99 percent, after Tuesday's euro-area flash inflation reading — a release outside my data window — which Euronews frames as an energy shock forcing the bank's hand.
The only EUR prints in my window ran the other way: Spanish unemployment rose 44.4K against 15.4K expected and the French budget deficit widened to -145.9B from -106.8B, both from the briefing, and the euro rose through them on six of seven legs — a rates bid, not a data bid. Sterling is the same energy-to-rates transmission with more distance to travel: BoE September pricing was under 4bp with a mid-August Reuters poll near 90 percent for no change through year-end, and as recently as Tuesday — when GBPUSD closed at 1.3514, its weakest since August 19 — money markets had pushed the next hike into early 2027 on softer crude.
With Brent holding near 95 dollars after Tuesday's CENTCOM strike wave, that disinflation logic is dead, and this morning's coverage has the pound eyeing 1.17 against the euro precisely as BoE pricing rebuilds; a currency priced for nothing has the most to gain from any rebuild, and GBP rose on all seven legs, taking 5.77bp from the euro itself.
The board's shape confirms a rates rotation rather than a risk hour: the franc fell on six of seven legs at -1.94bp median — the funding leg, an SNB at zero sold to finance the hikers — the yen sat flat at +0.34bp with its own September hike already priced through yesterday's Ueda repricing, the dollar was flat at -0.34bp into ADP, the aussie at +7.98bp rode the hawkish side of the board, and the kiwi at -5.42bp still wears Tuesday's gradualist RBNZ.
The caution on sterling is the long end: dated coverage has gilts at multi-decade-high yields in the global bond selloff, and reporting counts the rout as eating roughly 12 billion pounds of the Burnham government's budget headroom — front-end hike pricing lifts the pound today, but the fiscal channel is the tail that turns this bid into a sale if the long end keeps going.
My rates block was dropped as stale this run, so I state no fresh intraday rates linkage and no cross-market spreads. On the war: no new military action is confirmed in current reporting since Tuesday's CENTCOM wave, and the risk still prices through crude — now increasingly through the inflation expectations crude feeds, which is exactly what this hour is.
On the intervention watch: no MoF operation is reported and the 161 line stands; that wake is restated below. Nothing here touches the regime: markets pricing central banks toward telegraphed decisions at scheduled meetings, through ordinary channels, is precisely what the measured signals absorb on their own, and no official actor has acted in any G8 currency market.
No override, and no active overrides to keep or lift. Next: ADP at 12:15 UTC, the Bank of Canada at 13:45 with Macklem's press conference at 14:30, Friday's US jobs report, then the ECB on September 10 and the BoE on September 17.
