Yen dip bought within the hour: +12.2bp across all seven crosses, no catalyst
The pullback lasted exactly one hour, and the dip was bought. Into the Tokyo late morning the yen rose a median 12.2 basis points against all seven of its major counterparts — the sixth all-board advance of a stretch that began in the New York afternoon — reclaiming a little under half of the 27-basis-point give-back that preceded it, with no Japanese release anywhere near the window and no fresh headline behind the turn.
The only data in the hour was Chinese — consumer prices at 0.8 percent on the year, in line, and producer prices at 3.8 against 3.6 expected — and the board shows no China-beta response to it; nothing new happened. What resumed is the position, and the geometry of the resumption is the mirror of the retreat, cell for cell: the kiwi, which led the bounce with the board's biggest cell an hour ago, is now the softest currency on the board, down on all seven of its legs, its yen leg paying the most at 15.5 basis points; the franc, sold through the pullback, was sold again — down on six of seven, firmer only against the kiwi — while the yen alone was bought.
When a one-hour correction in a month-long trend is mirrored and half-reversed inside the following hour, the message is that the profit-taking found waiting demand, and the positioning arithmetic says why the demand waits. On the CFTC data through September 1 — the most recent reporting week — speculators were still adding to yen shorts even as the rally began: non-commercial net shorts widened by 28.9 thousand contracts to 92.2 thousand, the largest deterioration in the report.
The funding leg has repriced; the position it funds is still open — and Morgan Stanley's estimate of roughly 500 billion dollars of yen-funded carry still outstanding is the fuel gauge for how much exiting remains. In a market where the underlying short is that intact, a 27-basis-point dip is not a turn; it is liquidity for underwater positions to exit into, and it was absorbed inside an hour.
The rates screen offered nothing, again: Treasury futures drifted cheaper in the thin overnight — 0.4 basis points of price off the two-year note, 2.9 off the ten-year, 8.5 off the ultra bond, yields higher across the curve — and the yen was bought through it, as it has been through most of this run.
The backdrop is unchanged and all of it public: the quarter-point Bank of Japan hike on the 18th all but fully priced, with Reuters analysis putting little appetite inside the bank for a half-point move; finance minister Katayama holding to the orderly-market line that has amounted to acceptance of a strengthening currency since the summer's joint intervention; and speculation that the GPIF could lift its domestic allocation feeding the repatriation story underneath.
The map is unchanged too: the 152 area — the yen's 2026 high, brought within reach by Tuesday's 152.89 print — is the last named level below, and the broken 155.20-155.25 floor overhead remains the test that would turn this correction-and-resumption tape into a reversal. Until that retest, the week's frame holds — the European Central Bank on Thursday, American inflation on Friday with roughly 60 percent of a quarter-point Federal Reserve hike priced for the 15th and 16th, and the Bank of Japan on the 18th — and the market keeps telling the same story at every scale: for one hour the longs took profit, and the next hour the unwind took the other side.
