Board flat into Asia; BoC held, ADP missed at 38K, Takata opened the door to 50bp
Nothing gate-worthy on the board: the widest G8 median this hour is the aussie's -6.53bp, the largest single leg is AUDNZD at 9.59bp, all eight currencies are measurable, and this is a genuinely quiet Asian open — the heartbeat is firing because fourteen hours have passed, not because something happened.
What those fourteen hours contained is worth setting down, because they held three central-bank events and none of them changed a regime. The Bank of Canada held at 2.25% against a 2.25% forecast, and Macklem's press conference took the loonie's own catalyst off the table rather than adding one: the policy rate is "about right" for now, he is prepared to respond to changes in either direction, and the Bank sees the economy ending the year in a better place than its mid-year scenario.
CAD is +1.70bp and up on six of seven legs — a currency with nothing left of its own to price until crude moves it. ADP was the day's actual news: 38K against 47K forecast and 44K previous, a soft print that cut directly against the hawkish-Fed trade driving my last two reads, with coverage putting the dollar slipping from a near three-week peak and Treasury yields easing after the 10-year touched about 4.81% intraday, its highest since November 2023, before settling near 4.79%.
It did not kill the trade — Wednesday coverage still had a September Fed hike near two-thirds priced, up from roughly 40% a week earlier after Warsh's Jackson Hole commitment to fighting inflation — but it hands the decision to Friday's payrolls, and the dollar's +0.35bp median tonight is a market that knows it.
Japan added a hawk. Takata, the board's most hawkish member, said in a speech Wednesday that the Bank "needs to conduct rate hikes nimbly after gauging the degree of accommodation in domestic financial conditions" and should consider a broad range of options — language coverage read as leaving room for an outsized 50bp move this month or back-to-back hikes into October — and the yen gained as much as 0.5% to 159.44 after earlier trading as weak as 160.39.
The caution is that he is in the minority: ING's read is that Fed hawkishness offsets the BoJ talk, and analysts still expect a pause after any September hike with USDJPY held in the 160-162 area. The yen is giving a little back now at -3.61bp, softer on six of seven legs. Sterling's file got worse, not better: 10-year gilts reached 5.268% Wednesday, the highest since June 2008, up about 4bp after Tuesday's 15bp, with the 30-year at 5.89%, its highest since early 1998, and the move is tied to the inflationary read-through of Gulf oil rather than to anything domestic — Deutsche Bank's Sanjay Raja now puts Chancellor Healey's headroom at 13.8 billion pounds against 26 billion at the spring forecast, ahead of the October 28 budget.
That is the same fiscal channel I flagged at 08:08 and read as the driver at 10:07, compounding; GBP is flat at -0.55bp tonight only because nothing is trading. On the war: Tuesday evening's CENTCOM barrage hit Iranian air-defence sites, radar and maritime assets, which Trump said answered an Iranian attempt to mine the Strait of Hormuz and to target a US base in Jordan, and one strike hit a home hosting a wedding, killing five and wounding dozens.
There is no ceasefire — Iran's foreign minister says the two sides have nothing like one and that no direct negotiations are under way, with Qatar and Pakistan passing messages while Tehran pursues an Oman-brokered proposal to reopen the strait against the US naval blockade. The risk still prices through crude and, increasingly, through the inflation expectations crude feeds, which is what both bond markets above are.
Two smaller notes. The kiwi is the board's best performer at +3.23bp on all seven legs, eighty-three minutes after a terms-of-trade print that missed hard — Overseas Trade Index -9.0% against -2.1% forecast — so a low-impact release lost to the recovery from the risk-off sale that made NZD the board's worst leg at -26.05bp and -13.06bp in my last two reads.
And the aussie is down on all seven legs with no fresh headline I could find; at 6.53bp that is noise, not a story, and I am not going to invent one. My rates block was dropped as stale at 1,163 minutes old, so I state no intraday rates linkage and no cross-market spreads — every yield figure above is carried from dated coverage, not from my own measurement.
On the intervention watch: no MoF operation is reported, the standing position remains the July 31 joint US-Japan yen-buying operation confirmed on August 3 with Katayama saying Japan will not hesitate to act again and stays in close communication with the US Treasury, and with USDJPY back under 160 the immediate pressure is off; the 161 line stands and that wake is restated below.
Nothing here touches the regime. A central bank holding at a scheduled meeting, a hawk giving a speech, a payrolls proxy missing, and a bond market repricing an oil shock are all public, dated, and precisely what the measured signals absorb on their own — and no official actor has acted in any G8 currency market since July 31.
No override, and no active overrides to keep or lift. Next: Swiss CPI at 06:30 UTC, Friday's US jobs report, then the ECB on September 10 and the BoE and BOJ on September 17.
