Yen gapped 11.8bp at the reopen on the weekend's US-Iran tanker strikes
The yen opened the new week bid, and the reason is a weekend of shooting rather than anything Japanese. Against seven crosses it gapped a median 11.8 basis points stronger than Friday's close, and the ordering of those legs carries the message: most against the Australian dollar at 21.2 and the New Zealand dollar at 15.8, then sterling at 13.3, the US dollar at 11.8, the euro at 11.0, the Canadian dollar at 9.0, and least of all against the Swiss franc at 5.5.
Growth currencies sold hardest, the oil-linked loonie better protected, the other safe haven barely moving against it — that is risk aversion with an energy component, not a Japan story. What happened is that the tanker war escalated while the market was shut. On Saturday Iran's Revolutionary Guard fired ballistic missiles at a US aircraft carrier and a missile destroyer near the Strait of Hormuz; both evaded and nobody was hurt, and US Central Command answered by permanently disabling two Iranian oil tankers and destroying a third — the Downy off Kharg Island, Iran's principal export terminal, the Stark 1 near Jask, and the Kylo.
CENTCOM's commander, Admiral Brad Cooper, put the ladder on the record: "Let the message to the IRGC be clear: If you shoot at two of our ships, we will impose an even higher economic cost—taking out three of yours. We will not hesitate to defend American forces, and if necessary, destroy Iran's limited and exposed oil fleet."
On Sunday Tehran answered in kind, saying it had hit three tankers using what it called an unauthorised route through the strait, along with several US-linked vessels, a US naval drone and an unmanned surface vessel. And Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said Iran will declare a restricted zone outside the strait within days, running from the US Navy's blockade line into parts of the Gulf, with any ship entering it added to Iran's sanctions list.
The yen rather than the franc took the flow because it is the haven with a central bank behind it. It closed last week around 156 per dollar, up roughly 2.5% on the week, its strongest since Tokyo and Washington bought yen together in late July, and the Bank of Japan is widely expected to move at its 17-18 September meeting.
Board member Hajime Takata argued in the days before the weekend that 2026 is a regime change for policy, that hikes should not follow a fixed twice-yearly rhythm and that the response should not be confined to 0.25% — and he named Middle East-linked inflation among the pressures behind that view.
The oil escalation and the rate case point the same way for the yen, which is why the weekend's risk went there. The mirror image is the carry side: the Australian and New Zealand dollars are the funding trade's other leg, and they are precisely where the yen gained most. Keep the size in proportion.
Eleven basis points is a small gap; indicative opening quotes put dollar-yen near 155.98, on the strong side of Friday's late 156.23, and Monday-morning liquidity is thin until the Asian centres are properly open, so early prices swing. This is insurance being bought at the open, not a repricing of the world.
The same weekend carried a push in the other direction, which is part of why the number is small. Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met Putin in Moscow on Saturday and Zelensky in Kyiv on Sunday, both capitals held off aerial strikes to allow the visits with a 72-hour Kremlin pause on Kyiv, and the envoys left calling the talks substantive, Witkoff saying he is confident of a good resolution and Zelensky citing several new ideas he did not describe.
No breakthrough was announced, no broader ceasefire exists, and next steps were put weeks away. A signed framework would be worth far more to European risk than this weekend's tanker exchange was worth to the yen; it has not happened. On the euro, note what did not happen: the AfD's win in Saxony-Anhalt on Sunday, the first far-right victory in a German state election since the war, left the single currency in the middle of the pack at the open.
That is being treated as a coalition-and-reform problem for the months ahead rather than a currency event tonight, and for now that is the right frame. What would make this more than a gap: the strait has been largely shut for months, so escalation inside it is not a new world, and the market has been trading that world since spring.
The two lines that would change it are in Cooper's sentence and Rezaei's — American strikes moving from tankers at sea to Iran's export infrastructure onshore, or the restricted zone actually declared and enforced. Nearer to hand, 155.20-155.25 turned the yen back three times last week and holds tonight; whether it holds through Tokyo is the difference between a hedge and a trend.
