NZD sold on all seven legs, -11.2bp, as RBA hike bets lift the Aussie to a 3-month high
The kiwi fell a median 11.2 basis points across all seven of its crosses in the hour running into London's morning, with no New Zealand release behind it — and, this time, no New Zealand story at all. The country's own weekend news ran to a party's supermarket policy and a retailer moving a call centre across the Tasman; nothing that moves a currency.
The cause is on the other side of that sea. The Australian dollar printed a fresh three-month high against the US dollar near 0.7217 this morning on hardening expectations of a Reserve Bank of Australia hike, and it is the only other currency on the board doing anything: higher on all seven of its legs, a median 4.8 basis points, with the largest single move anywhere the 14.8 basis points it took from the kiwi.
Strip out the two antipodeans and the board is asleep — every other currency sits within about two and a half basis points of flat, the American and Canadian desks are dark for their Labour Day holidays, and the yen, bought three separate times between the weekend reopen and the Tokyo close, is finally resting.
The trans-Tasman trade has clean policy logic and fresh fuel. Australia's banks are split on timing — National Australia Bank now expects a hike at the 28-29 September meeting, while Commonwealth Bank and ANZ look to November with the risk of an earlier move — and market pricing for a September move rose to roughly 58% after last week's stronger-than-expected GDP reading.
New Zealand's central bank spent last week arguing the opposite direction: it hiked on 2 September into a rate track more gradual than the market had priced, and Assistant Governor Karen Silk said on the 4th that December, not October, is the more likely date for the next move. One central bank may act in three weeks; the other has asked the market to wait three months.
The Australian-New Zealand cross is the instrument that prices exactly that difference, and it is being paid this morning. But the kiwi did not fall only against the Aussie. It gave 12.2 basis points to a dollar whose entire market is on holiday and 11.7 to the euro, and it lost ground to everything else besides — which says the selling is the kiwi's own.
This is the same weakness it has carried since the decision disappointed a market positioned for a faster pace and a higher endpoint: at or near the bottom of the board for most of the past week, the one currency that never got its weekend money back. Against the US dollar it softened below 0.5900 to trade near 0.5870 in Asian dealing, within sight of last week's 0.580, its weakest since 30 July.
The mechanism is worth naming plainly. In a week that holds a Federal Reserve decision the market still argues about, a European Central Bank meeting on Thursday and a heavily priced Bank of Japan hike the week after, the currency whose central bank just took itself out of the queue until December becomes the board's funding leg — the thing borrowed and sold to own whatever has a live story.
Today the live story is the Aussie. Elsewhere, the loonie is the board's only other soft spot, lower against most of the board in the final hours before Canada's counter-tariffs on about C$27.6 billion of US goods take effect at a minute past midnight — a repricing that, like everything North American today, is really tomorrow's business once real liquidity returns.
Keep the kiwi's move in proportion too: eleven basis points in a holiday-thinned book is a lean, not a rupture, and nothing in it touches the regime. Two central banks disagreeing about their own calendars is precisely what measured signals exist to price.
